Qualcomm has just confirmed its Qualcomm Snapdragon Tech Summit 2019 event, which will take place December 3 through December 5 on the island of Maui, Hawaii. Considering previous releases of its top of the line chips, we can assume that the US company will release Snapdragon 865 between the aforementioned dates.
Looking back on previous releases, it is easier to reach this conclusion. Snapdragon 845 was announced on December 5, 2017, while Snapdragon 855 was announced on December 4, 2018.
These releases make sense at the end of each year, as the year begins with the announcement of new smartphones equipped with Qualcomm’s flagship chip. This is the case for the upcoming Galaxy S11 handsets, which are due to be announced in February 2020. And of course, other models may be announced even before that.
The most consistent information from everyone in the industry is what we expect: At this year’s Summit Qualcomm is expected to introduce the new high-performance chipset to the Android smartphone market. The new Snapdragon 865, as it is being called, is to be manufactured in the 7 nanometer process developed by Samsung rather than the TSMC model.
This would be the first time Samsung has been manufacturing chips for Qualcomm in years, as TSMC has taken over the South Korean post since the release of Snapdragon 845, but now relinquishing its post back to Samsung.
Other appliances
Last year, the company unveiled Snapdragon 8cx SoC aimed at laptops as the first version of this type of Qualcomm component. The company is expected to update this line as well.
Finally, it also features the Snapdragon Wear chip geared toward wearables such as smart watches. It is also possible for the company to show news in this sector.
Snapdragon 865 should feature a new Adreno GPU and improved CPUs, possibly based on Cortex-A75. Given that Qualcomm has invested heavily in image processing and machine learning on the Snapdragon 855, it is quite likely that these areas will also be the focus of the new processor.
Remembering that at the same event, the manufacturer may announce other products; such as an enhanced version of Snapdragon 8cx; which is aimed at notebooks, and the successor of Snapdragon Wear for smart watches.
The event takes place in Maui, Hawaii, December 3-5. Canaltech will be present and bring all the news for you. Stay tuned!
